With all the buzz about blogging and
search engine optimization it is about time for us to give our two cents on the topic. I heard a good seminar by Matt Cutts and thought I would share some tips about effective blogging for search engine optimization. For those of you who don’t know Matt, Cutts is the main man at Google for their search engine strategies.
I will do my best to summarize the seminar on the blogging side and give you the main points and add a few of my own thoughts:
- Don’t put your blog at the root page of your domain and make sure to name it blog or something that is consistent in case you change software someday. This is good for link building, some people will link to the main page but others will link directly to the blog. Essentially this means that you are better off having your blog located at www.yourdomain.com/blog/ You can see an example of this by visiting Matt's site
- Do research on Search Engine Optimization keywords. There are free tools on the Internet to find out how many times keywords are searched for (http://inventory.overture.com). Use these to find out if they relate to your blog and leverage the text and other key elements around these keywords.
- Make sure to put the keywords in the URL path (domain.com/keywords-you-want-to-rank-for). Using hyphens is the best scenario then underscores. Make sure not to have spaces in the path names.
- Include the keywords in the title, meta information and headings of the page.
- If you do include images, make sure they have alt tags. Don’t get spammy with your tags try to keep them around three or four words. Search engines won’t usually deduct points for having sentences but if your tags include tons of spam it could hurt your page.
If you would like to start blogging but don’t know how to incorporate everything above our
Content Management System can handle everything for you.
