On June 2, 2002, Justin Sullivan was named baseball player of the year for the state of Oklahoma. The Daily Oklahoman decided that this Yukon Valedictorian and star baseball player deserved the honor of being named the best baseball player for the entire state. This was a great day for everyone who knew Justin personally because he was such a well deserving young man. He was deserving not only because baseball abilities but more importantly because of his integrity and his example on and off the field.
Because of this very public honor, Justin was poised to launch into an incredible college and professional baseball career. Justin was in the middle of praying through all his opportunities which included baseball scholarships offers to Rice and Nebraska. In addition to this, Justin was also being seriously considered by Major League Baseball as a high draft pick right out of High School. So many opportunities were coming his way. In fact, at 11:30a.m. the following day, the head baseball coach at OU left a message on Justin's home answering machine offering him a full scholarship to OU to play baseball.
Unfortunately, Justin never had the opportunity to hear that message because approximately 1:30p.m. on June 3rd, Justin was driving home from work with his best friend and his girlfriend. About 2 minutes after pulling onto I-44 in the middle of Oklahoma City, the back wheels of a semi-tractor trailer broke off an east bound truck, crossed the median and struck the vehicle. Immediately before the tires struck the vehicle, Justin saw it coming and turned his vehicle so that the tires only hit the drivers side. This action killed Justin instantly but it saved the lives of two of the closest people in his life. Both Josh (his best friend) and Elizabeth, (his girlfriend) walked away from the accident with only scratches.
After Justin's death, I had the responsibility of preaching his funeral. While preparing to preach that funeral message, I discovered Justin's Spiritual Journal that he was keeping in the last six months of his life. During his last six months on the earth, he spent every day writing his thoughts to the Lord. My life was so impacted, I wrote a book about Justin's connection with God and this book has enabled us to begin a brand new ministry that has amazingly made an impact not only across Oklahoma but across the nation and around the world.
How would your organization benefit from a new website?
- This new ministry is
experiencing terrific "grass roots" growth and the website would facilitate that growth to continue. All over the country, people are beginning to learn about
Justin's story and are finding out how to get a hold of the book "A Life Worth Following."
- The baseball team formed to travel the country impacted thousands of kids this past summer. This new website would allow us to expand our impact to even more young baseball players for years to come.
- Many people around the country who have experienced the loss of a young person have been helped because of Justin's life and story. A new website would help us reach them more effectively.
- Our ministry is having a big impact and this new website will help us go to the
next level. It is important to note that athletes at all levels have
been impacted by Justin's
life and have chosen to go through "A Life Worth Following." Books have
been sent all around the country to Major League Baseball teams, girls
soccer teams and individuals. Our simple blog site is the only place to
purchase the book and though we have done virtually zero advertising,
all over the country people have sought us out. It is amazing to us
that so many people have been touched and encouraged by Justin's story.
- The biggest reason I believe this non-profit is deserving of this
website is because right now there is incredible momentum and this is the perfect
time for us to launch a new and impacting website. This coming October,
Major League Baseball has agreed to partner with us for some
fundraising opportunities. This gives us the opportunity to take our
story to a national stage. It would be such a blessing to have your
help so that this national opportunity can be maximized.
What else can you tell us about how this organization makes a difference?
- This past summer, 26 baseball players received scholarships to play baseball all over the country.
- Over 1200 kids benefited from the free baseball clinics around the country and in Nicaragua.
- 4000 copies of "A Life Worth Following" have been sent all over the
country. This is a self-published book and has not been advertised. It
has been all word of mouth.
- The Daily Oklahoman and all the Major news networks in OKC have covered our story this summer because of the impact.
- Our baseball ministry was endorsed by Bricktown Ballpark, FCA and
Major League baseball. This is a scholarship program and youth sports
ministry that is impacting thousands of churches and individuals all
over the country. The momentum is building and now is the time to take
it to the next level.
Thank you for considering our ministry for this incredible blessing.
