How templates work with blog and calendar elements

This week, I was pinch hitting a bit on the support team and got to answer some great questions about our CMS software.  I thought I'd pick one and post about it here on the blog just for fun.

Question -- "How do I get content to appear in the regions on a blog or calendar detail page?"

The CMS uses the default template of your website to display the detail page for a blog or calendar element.  But the detail page isn't a "real page" (it's not counted as a page on your site), so it doesn't actually contain any content in its editable regions.

So, sometimes people are surprised when the content they have placed into the editable regions on the page containing the blog or calendar element doesn't show up on a blog or calendar item's detail page.  Hmmm ... how can we solve this issue?

Well, simply put, you just need to put the content you want to include on the detail page onto the actual website template and then set that template as the default template for your site.  Then, if you have other pages where you don't want that content to appear, you can simply set those individual pages to use a different template.

Now, some of you may be thinking "what in the world is he talking about?"  If that is you, you probably don't even have a need to do what I have described above.  But, if you do and if you have questions, just send us an email and we'll help you out.

How do I archive the blog posts?

Shannon, to archive blog posts, you would create another blog element, perhaps on another page, and tell that blog element to show posts from your original blog element. Then, on the original blog element, you could set it to show, say, the 10 most recent posts with the full body of each post displayed, but on the archive element, tell it to show all posts with only the title. A good example of this is the blog you are reading. Look to the upper right for a link to our archive and you will see how that works.
