Tutorial: how to use the form builder to sell items

On paid accounts, the form builder has the ability to receive payments.  One of the benefits of this is that you can set up a small e-commerce site and sell products online.  The form builder uses your choice of PayPal, Google Checkout, or Authorize.net as its payment gateway, so you will need an account with one of these providers before you can accept payments.

In the tutorial below, I will show you how to set up a form to sell products online. In my example, I've put just one item per page to make it easier to view here, but you could have multiple items per page on your site if you wish.

How to:

  1. Login to your website.

  2. Add a text element to the part of the page that you want to have the picture and description of the item.
  3. Upload a picture of the item, add it your text element, and put a description next to it.

  4. Add the Form Builder element below the product picture and description.
  5. Fill in the Form Name field and Description field if needed.  If you would like to receive an email when this form is filled out, click the Email Notification box and type in your email address.

  6. Click on the Payment Settings button on the left and click Enable Payments.  Choose your Payment processor from the dropdown list, type in your email address in the Email Address field and choose your currency type from the Currency dropdown list.

    Note:
We do not need to put in a base price because we are going to allow them to purchase multiple size shirts from us.
  7. Click on the Add Fields tab in the top left of the screen.

  8. Add the information fields you need in the form.  Below are some of the most commonly used fields:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Phone
    • Email Address
  9. Click on the Drop Down field to select it.

  10. Change the Field Title on the Properties tab to your product information.

  11. Click on the Choices tab and type in the name of the product and/or quantity that you want to have.  Next, type in the price in the Price field.  The price will not show by default.  You will need to type in the price next to the description in order for the user to see the price.  In the example below I am showing them they are purchasing 1 shirt for $15.95, 2 shirts for $30.00 and 3 shirts for $42.50.

  12. Click the Save Form button.

  13. You will then see the Your form has been saved dialog box.  If you are finished editing the form click on the Exit button.

  14. You have now created a payment solution for only small shirts. :)  If you want to sell other sizes as well, you can repeat steps 9 through 11 again until you have the desired amount of shirts. You can also add more quantity options to each size, or configure your drop downs in whatever works best for your product. The system is very flexible.

The above is just one, simple example of how you can use the form builder to sell products. In addition to drop down boxes, the form also features radio buttons and check boxes which can have pricing assigned to their choices. Using all of these fields in different combinations gives you a lot of flexibility in creating e-commerce setups.

We know that the form builder is not a full e-commerce store, but with integrated payments, it can meet the vast majority of e-commerce needs in a very simple-to-use format. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

We do have a demo of this at http://support.publishpath.com/how-do-i-collect-a-payment-through-a-registration-form. This demo does not follow the tutorial above, but there is a video and tutorial with it. I hope this helps you out. If you have any other questions you can send an email to support@publishpath.com.

Lets say I duplicate this over and over and create 10 items for a store.

1) Would I have to have a separate page for each store item?

2) Would a customer have to fill out a form on each page to purchase said item?

Chris- This is a good question. In my example above I would use a page for each item which the customer would have to fill out a form for each item purchased. Another way to set this up is to have multiple items being sold on one page. You would just need to set up seperate dropdowns or check boxes in order to do this. It is really flexible in it's design. If you have any other questions you can send an email to support@publishpath.com.

Thanks Chad. I just ran into that problem with a client request and I had been racking my brain on how to implement it with the forms builder, but without a dedicated eCommerce solution.

I really enjoy your company's products and enjoy browsing the speaklight forums daily. I am in the process of multiple uses and client uses of your CMS. I think it is a solid product dollar-for-dollar.

I am implementing plans to use your services to maximize my exposure online. I hope in the near future when I get all my ducks in a row to give back to your community with "how-to's..." and help users in the forums.

Thanks for your help

I am wondering how to ensure someone pays before their submission is complete.
Is this possible?

Thanks for this amazing program.
