New in Water, Sky and LightCMS: 301 redirects and more

Sit back and enjoy the ride, kids, because it's time for a new round of features on our Water, Sky and LightCMS systems. The upgrade process went smoothly and our system was down for only two minutes. Now, get ready because new features are waiting for you. As always, they are instantly live on every website on our system at no extra charge. Let's take a look, shall we?

In addition to a host of minor tweaks, fixes and infrastructure upgrades, there are two major new features that we know you will love.

Number One: 301 Redirects

That's right, kids, it's finally here. You can now redirect any URL on your website's domain(s) to any page, blog post, or calendar event in your site. Let's say you decide to reorganize your site and you no longer need certain pages, but people and search engines might have those old pages indexed. So, setup a redirect and point those old URLs to valid pages. Or, maybe you're moving a website onto our system and you have a directory structure on the old site that you want to change. Redirect all of your old URLs to the appropriate pages on the new site.

Whatever your needs, 301s are now available for you through the brand new 301 Redirect Manager. Just click on "My Website --> Settings" from the toolbar, and select the "Advanced" tab.  Look for the 301 Redirection section and click "Launch the Redirect Manager."

The redirect manager explains everything in detail. You have two options for adding redirects.  Either add them manually one at a time, or import an XML sitemap to add them in batches. The XML import feature is especially useful if you are moving an existing site onto our CMS system.  Just import the sitemap from the old site and all pages are automatically loaded into the manager for you to redirect.

301 Redirection is a huge step forward. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy bringing it to you.

Number Two: Custom Detail Page Templates for Blog Posts and Calendar Events

Previously, blog detail pages and calendar event details pages had to utilize your website's default template. This was problematic for a few reasons.  First, if you wanted to use a special template with unique content on your blog detail pages, this was difficult to accomplish. Second, there was no way to populate the editable regions with content when they were displayed on a blog detail page.

Well, if you've struggled with these issues, fear no more. You can now create a custom detail page template that will be used whenever blog posts or calendar events are displayed on your site. How do you do it?  It's simple. Just add a new template to your design called "detail.html". That's it. The system will recognize that template by the file name and use it as described.

Of course, taking advantage of this feature requires a bit of familiarity with HTML and our templating system, so this feature is primarily for our LightCMS resellers and those of you who integrate your own designs.

Enjoy!

We hope you enjoy these new features as much as we enjoy bringing them to you. Stay tuned in the months to come as we are continually working on improvements. And, as always, if you have any questions, contact us at support@publishpath.com.
