Three questions that I get asked a lot, and their answers.

In my job, I get to talk to a lot of potential customers.  Primarily, I talk with designers and agencies who are interested in reselling our content management system product, Light.  During these conversations, there are three questions that come up a lot, so I thought I'd just share some answers to those questions here.  Even though I mostly speak with customers interested in Light, all of these questions can apply to our Water and Sky CMS products as well.

Can I use my own domain if I have a website on your product?

Yes you can!

When you set up a website on one of our products, we give you a temporary domain name at first so that you can access and use your website. That domain is something like http://mysite.publishpath.com. While this domain will always work for your website, you can also assign your own domains to the site, such as http://www.mysite.com.

Once you assign your own domain, you don't ever have to use the generic domain we gave you if you don't want to. To find out more about how to setup your own domains, visit this section of our support site on domain names.

What kind of design can I use on your system?

Any kind.

I love this question because it lets me talk about one of the greatest strengths of our software products -- designs. I honestly don't think that you could find a content management system that affords more flexibility with custom design than our products. The possibilities are truly unlimited, and if you want to get some visual idea of just how flexible the system is, take a look at our flickr portfolio. Most of these designs are running on our software.

If I put my website on your system, how secure will it be?

Very secure.

Today, in fact, is the day that we are moving our applications and all websites running on them to our new, upgraded servers. The servers are amazingly powerful and the facility in which they are located is amazingly secure. There's multi-layer redundancy on every critical system including power, cooling, security, fire suppression and connection to the internet. It really does not get any more secure or protected than our tier one datacenter facility.

I'm just about to launch a new site. My CMSLight account only mentions an IP address and no nameserver. My DNS server requests both. What should I do? By the way, the link to your article about domains has broken. Thanks.

Anthony, thanks for catching the broken link. It has been corrected now. To your question, you don't want to change your nameservers. That would essentially move your DNS hosting away from where you currently have it. Instead, you want to edit the DNS on your current DNS host and add what is called an "A" record (or "address" record) that points to our IP address.
