  • The LightCMS Site Redesigned

Along with the launch of our built-in online store functionality (see the previous post), the LightCMS website has been completely redesigned and restructured. It now sports an updated visual aesthetic as well as changes to its overall page layout to make it even easier to navigate. The changes include an updated features section, a new designers section with information about the LightCMS Designer program, as well as an on-site support section including improved design documentation. There are a host of other improvements that we encourage you to see for yourself!

The redesign has already been featured on several popular design-related sites, such as CSSMania and Line25. And for their hard work, we're immensely proud of our team!

  • Behind the scenes: Element Fusion’s work on BobStoops.com

A few months ago, Element Fusion launched a new website for BobStoops.com, which is the recruiting arm of Oklahoma University’s football program. As one of the nation’s preeminent NCAA football programs, OU has a lot riding on the success of this website. Element Fusion is proud to serve as web design and development partner with BobStoops.com and we wanted to share just a little about our experience working on this project.

    BobStoops_750

Element Fusion’s Andrea Decker serves as the Internet Consultant for BobStoops.com and walked with them every step of the way during the development of this project. Andrea describes the project as follows:

“The objective was to build a powerful, in-your-face, online recruiting tool for OU football and to show recruits that OU is ‘Where Champions are made and Championships are won.’ Essentially, they challenged us to build a website better than any other college football team out there, and that’s what we delivered.”

Andrea also indicates that Element Fusion was able to meet the objectives of BobStoops.com at about one fourth the budget quoted by the west coast interactive shops with whom the organization had consulted.

Check out BobStoops.com for an example of Element Fusion’s work on a high-profile, large scale project.

  • All-new LightCMS website

Today, we're happy to launch our brand new product website for the LightCMS content management system for designers. This beautiful new design was created by our Creative Director, Amine Ouahidi. Here's a look at the top of the new home page.

This is version four of the LightCMS website. Some points of interest from a design perspective include the fact that it utilizes the 960 grid system in its 12 column grid format. Also notable is the white background. This is the first LightCMS product website to utilize a white background. The pricing page is also completely reworked. We've moved away from using the reseller pricing grid we make available to resellers (though we will still maintain the grid and we still utilize it on our retail product sites) in favor of a new layout that hits on more LightCMS-specific content.

On the home page, you'll want to take a look at the all-new overview video at the top right. The video has been completely reworked and we even brought in professional voice talent to replace my meager voice this time. :)

All in all, we're super excited about the new site. Not just the design, but all of the new content and features. We'll be focusing more on some of these new features in future posts. Be sure to stay tuned to this blog, and the all-new LightCMS blog, for more details.

  • Two new free designs added to the CMS

We've added two fresh, new designs to our LightCMS, WaterCMS, and SkyCMS systems. • New, free designs added to the CMS

We've added two new designs to our CMS design galleries. You can use these designs as-is for your website or download the source code for the designs and make your own modifications. Either way, there is no charge. They are free for you to use however you like as long as the resulting website runs on either WaterCMS, SkyCMS or LightCMS.

Here's a look at the new designs below. Access them by logging into your account and visiting the design manager.

  • Three new, free designs added to the CMS

We've added three new design templates to the design manager inside our CMS systems. They are all variations on a single design, but they provide a great deal of variety as you can see below.

As always, these designs are free for you to use. You can download the source, modify them as you wish, or use them as is. As long as the website you're developing runs on our CMS system, you have license to use these any way you see fit. You can also have us customize one of these designs for you through our Design Xpress service if you wish.

    Atmosphere - InnerCity

    Atmosphere - MorningLight

    Atmosphere - ReBirth

  • New free design available for the CMS

We've added yet another free design, in two color variations, to our WaterCMS, SkyCMS and LightCMS products. This template is available on all sites in the system. To find it, login to your site and visit My Website --> Designs --> Design Gallery. There you can apply the design to your website, or even download the source code of the design so you can use it as a starting point for your own work.

    Special considerations

This design has a few fancy features that require some special consideration.

    1. Home page login element. If you click the "member login" button on the home page, a login window overlays in a separate layer. PLEASE NOTE: you need to add a login element to this login window before it will function properly. Instructions are provided on the template (click "member login" to see them).
    2. Rotating features. The home page also contains a set of three image/text combinations that rotate automatically like a slideshow. The contents of these three features are included in regions, so you can edit/replace them with the CMS tools when logged in. You can also add more "slides" to the set by editing the home.html template. Simply copy and paste one of the existing sets and increment the id numbers as needed. If you are not comfortable making edits like this, no problem — you can simply use the three existing slides and edit them with the CMS tools.

  • We're pleased to sponsor Future of Web Design 2009

We've partnered up with the folks at Carsonified this year, setting up LightCMS as a sponsor of the Future of Web Design Conference 2009. This premier design conference takes place in London at the end of April. Unfortunately, we don't get to travel to London for the conference this year, but we still wanted to be a part. So, we've signed on as a partner and we hope that everyone fortunate enough to attend will have a terrific and productive time while we stare longingly out our windows and dream of joining you across the sea.

LightCMS has a growing user base of designers located in the UK and around the globe and we've enjoyed great success in working with our international partners. FOWD is an event that brings together top design professionals from around the world, so we feel a great connection with them and we're pleased to be part.

If you'll be at the conference, or if you've been in the past, let us know. We'd love to hear about your experiences.

  • More free designs added to the CMS

It's that time again. Time to announce some new designs that have been added to the system. This time there are two new designs with multiple color variations on each.

Why all the design templates? What are they good for?

Good questions. Some people use our templates as is for their websites, and we think that's great. Any one of our templates can provide you with a professional website design that's up and running instantly.

But even more people use our design templates as starting points for their own custom designs. You can download the HTML/CSS source code (or access it via FTP) for any design and you have full freedom to change it up however you want. If you're not a coder, you can also order Design Xpress, and we'll do some customizations to any one of our templates for you.

So, as you can see, the more templates the merrier. And here are five new looks that are ready to go right now on any website on our WaterCMS, SkyCMS or LightCMS systems. Just login and visit My Website --> Designs to view all of the available templates. Plus, stay tuned for more to come.

  • Getting results from your website, part two: the impact of design

This is part two in our series on "Getting results from your website." Other articles in the series include: "part one, the website hub." In this article, we're going to talk about the importance and impact of website design.

    Design inspires trust.

First impressions matter. It may be cliche, but that doesn't make it any less true. When you go in for that job interview, taking time to present yourself will pay off. In the same way, presenting your business in the best possible light is well worth the investment.

Your website is one of the first, if not the first, connection points your company or organization will have with those you are trying to reach. I don't think it's overstating to say that your website can make or break your first impression. Just ask yourself — have you ever made decisions about a company based on its website? I know I have. When I do research on the web, the quality of a site's design speaks volumes to me.

Design makes things easy to use

In addition to building trust, quality web design also makes things easy to use. If a visitor can't figure out how to find the information they need on your site, you will lose their interest and likely their business. Professional web designers specialize in blending great looks with ease of use. They know how to present things and make them easy to navigate, quick to load ... etc. This is a special talent that requires more than just an eye for good design. Therefore, it's important to employ the help of an experienced web design team when putting together your website.

    Design is critical

Quality web design is critical for a website to get results. When implemented correctly, a good design will grab your visitors' attention, gain their trust, and guide them easily to the information you want them to find. Without the critical component of design, it is very difficult for a website to get real results for your business or organization.

  • Submit your designs to the new LightCMS gallery

We've launched a new version of the LightCMS gallery on the LightCMS marketing website. This gallery displays screen shots in a list view and a larger, detail view. It also uses our blog element, which gives you the ability to subscribe to the gallery by RSS so you can stay updated when we add new sites.

Submit your designs to the gallery

If you've designed websites that are running on LightCMS, we'd love to consider your design work for inclusion in our gallery. You can now submit your own sites for consideration. Just fill out our submission form. If included, your work will be featured along with your name, company name and a link to your own website, if you wish. This can be a great chance to showcase your work to a large and growing design community, in addition to getting some great link juice from our LightCMS website.

Keep in mind that we don't include every site in our gallery, but we will consider every submission. We're looking to include the best examples we can find to demonstrate the design flexibility of LightCMS. So, send us your work and we'll take a look.

  • More free website designs

Today, we're releasing another website design in two color variations as free designs on our CMS system. These are ministry website designs, so they are available on all SkyCMS websites as well as ministry websites added through LightCMS.

As always, you are free to use the designs as they come (they can be instantly applied to your website through the design manager), or you can use the designs as starting points for your own work. You have access to the full HTML/CSS code to make whatever modifications you desire. You can also have us customize these designs for you through our Design Xpress service. Remember, the license give you full rights to use and modify these designs, as long as the end result website is running on our CMS system. Enjoy!

  • 6 ideas for fighting creative blocks

We've all experienced creative blocks from time to time. For designers, keeping productive is important and as you grow in your profession, you pick up simple techniques that help avoid blocks and keep the ideas flowing. Here are a few tips that I use to help keep creative:

    1. Don't try to start from "nothing." Start your design process with some content so you have elements to work with. So often I see designers try to design “nothing." Not only does that make it tough on you and leave the potential for problems (oh wait I need to “fit” one more thing in there late in the design phase), but it’s the opposite of what design is all about: communication. We take someone else’s content, message, brand, etc. and visually communicate it. But you can’t do that if you don’t have those things in place. My early comps usually have just blocks of text and grey shapes. It’s a skeleton - an organization that is the foundation for the design. Then you add visual style to create tension and contrast and emphasis and feelings to support the brand. Not only is this a more pure approach, but it helps to have more elements to interact with on the page. Happy Cog's Jason Santa Maria wrote a great post a few years ago documenting a similar process.
    2. Look around for inspiration. Hopefully you keep a sketchbook, Flickr set, or link list of designs that inspire you. If not, jump on one of the many CSS galleries and get a feel for what’s cool and maybe a few elements that spark an idea. Some good examples: www.cssburst.com, www.cssmania.com, www.cssimport.com, www.designsnack.com, and www.faveup.com. It's also sometimes helpful to look outside of your field. If you're designing a webpage, look at wallpaper samples, or billboards, or architecture. Design can take many forms but visual language is often very consistent. Many times another application might provide the spark of an idea that you need.
    3. Keep looking around for inspiration. This might seem redundant, but sometimes you just have to keep digging until you finally hit it. I use Flickr a lot for inspiration. Sometimes I just browse random photos for colors that strike me and then sample out 3-4 for a base color scheme. Other color tools like Adobe's kuler and colorlovers are good places to start as well.
    4. Fix elements that need help. Don’t be afraid to freshen up a logo or otherwise keep customers from bad decisions. They are coming to you for a professional design so don’t let bad content or a poorly thought out design brief bring you down.
    5. Be realistic. Don’t feel like you have to create the most pure, isolated, brilliant concept the client has ever seen. It’s ok to borrow ideas. Aim for clean, professional, and attractive.
    6. Know when to walk away. This one is sometimes the most effective. When you’re stuck, stop. Get away from it for awhile. Take a walk. Take a break. I often try to split my design comps over a few days just for this reason. Sometimes fresh eyes can lead to new directions.
  • Vector Magic

A thorn in the side of most any designer who works with clients is getting them to provide you with content, graphics, logos, etc., in a timely fashion and in a usable format. Logos can be particularly frustrating as many small to medium sized businesses either don't have a professionally designed logo or even more commonly, don't have high resolution artwork of the original design. On more than one occasion here at Element Fusion, a client has responded to a request for a digital version of their logo with the badly compressed logo from their website pasted into a Microsoft Word document. That leaves our designer to either rebuild the logo in a vector format or use a bit of Photoshop trickery to make what we have work. Sure, all of the major applications have some form of bitmap-vector tracing, but the results are typically not useable. Leave it to a few smart graduate students to best the efforts of companies like Adobe who have spent years improving their conversion tools.

Vector Magic (vectormagic.stanford.edu/vectorize) is a research project by James Diebel and Jacob Norda, of the Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. It is an 100% browser-based tool that allows users to upload a JPG image to be converted to a clean, scalable vector format. For those unaware, photographs and most bitmap graphics are comprised of a multitude of tiny dots called pixels – each one a different color to form the image. With bitmap (or raster) graphics you have a fixed amount of image data to define that image, so enlarging that image doesn't provide more detail, it only makes the "dots" larger. Something like sitting really close to a television screen. Vector graphics are mathematically defined shapes that are often smaller in file size and offer the ability to scale to any size, large or small while retaining perfect image quality. Vector Magic has a simple user-interface that takes users though a simple question-based set of steps to help smooth the conversion.

After uploading your image (I choose a graphic of the Element Fusion logo I had handy), the system begins to ask questions about the quality, amount of compression artifacts, and type of image provided.

Next the system shows the colors found in the image and lets the user determine how many to use in the final graphic. Here I've choose the set of original colors from the graphic. The lighter swatches in the larger sets typically consist of colors use to optically smooth the edges of the shapes in the original raster image.

This screen shows the original image next to the newly created vector image. Several sophisticated tools are presented here that allow you to manually tweak either the original or converted image before re-vectoring. My vector came out nearly perfect the first time so no editing was even needed.

Finally, I chose to download the image in an EPS format and opened it with Adobe Illustrator. The final result is amazing.

Vector Magic really is a magical tool. It is amazing that a simple browser-based application manages to out-perform similar tools included in expensive graphics applications like Adobe Flash and Adobe Illustrator.
