When should I redesign my website? That is a question that is asked of me often. I speak in broad generalities when I state a time. But when is the right time? I believe a website should age gracefully. If you compared websites to people, then changing photos and small design updates on the site would compare to getting Botox shots. Small updates from time to time could give your site design a much needed shot in the arm (pun intended)!
Many sites around the net do not age gracefully or the owner has taken the
Ronco "Just set it and forget it" approach. This is easy if you just have a website because everyone else does.
I now have a definitive answer for you as to how often you should update your site, I have made a handy tool that will help out. See which category you fit in.
- 6 months- If the colors of your site are so last month.
- 1 year- If your fiercest competitor continues to update their site at that pace.
- 2 years- If you want your new design to coincide with every time you trade in your lease car for a new one.
- 3 years- If your site has had 2 to 3 small design updates per year.
- 5+- If you are one to set it and forget it, and then remember again.
So there you go. Now you know how often you should redesign your site. By the way the colors of this blog are so last month!
