Where to start with your website

There are many things to consider when thinking about your online marketing efforts. If you already have a website maybe you’re not seeing a return on investment? If you are considering a new website it’s about getting more business. Either way, you should ask yourself why you want/have a website and what purpose should it serve.

A website can be a great investment but investing money in a website without considering a few issues can leave your experience less than enjoyable.

  1. Know your competition. Many times the people who are competing with you online aren’t the same as your local competition. Go online and do research to see who is getting ranked for the services you provide and what they are doing with their website.
  2. What do you provide? Do you sell products, services or information? What sets you apart from your competition (both local and online)? Design your website to showcase your strengths as a company and make sure your visitors know why they should choose you over ABC Company (price, customer service, knowledge ... etc.).
  3. Who is your customer? Who buys your goods and services? how do they talk about your industry and why do they choose your business over the competition?  If you know who your customer is you can build a site that is geared to meeting their needs. Remember, this site is for them so you may have to put aside your personal feelings for the best results.
  4. How will people find your site? Having a great website only matters if people see it. Find out if you should invest money in Internet marketing (search engine optimization, pay-per-click and banner ads).  These can all be good options as long as they are performed correctly.
  5. Keep it fresh. Offer tips, training and information to your online audience. We’ve all seen websites that were last updated in 2004 -- that is an eternity on the Internet. Make sure you have the ability to update your website using a content management system.
  6. Hire a professional. Yes, your nephew does web design but unless he is a professional web designer you will be missing out on essential skills to have a professional website

Following the guidelines above will give you the foundation to begin your search for the right web design firm. I would suggest preparing this information and presenting it to the firms you are considering. If you feel comfortable with their understanding of what you are trying to accomplish then you are off to a great start for your online presence.
